Stage 1C – Researching the Market & Tips on Cold Calling

Once you know yourself, it is time to start researching the market – finding out more about the type of job you want and the companies and organizations that have similar posts. Doing this will help you make a short list of the places where you would like to work.

Where would you start looking for work?

Which of them would you consider using?

Tips on Cold Calling

1. Ask to speak to the decision maker by name.

2. Give just enough information about yourself to generate interest in yourself as a potential employee.

3. Mention one or two concise achievements, using facts and figures where possible.

4. Respond to questions with your own questions to find out more about the company.

5. Use positive questions that invite a ‘yes’ response.

For example:

Good morning. I’m John Smith. I would like to speak to Mary Adam. Is she there?

I have considerable professional in the hotel industry. I have worked for a number of big hotels in Poland.

My mother tongue is Polish, but I can also speak Spanish, having worked for a big hotel in Spain. Are you looking for employees with international experience?

To begin with I mainly worked managing a team of cleaners and porters. However, my Spanish improved quickly and I was moved to reception, where I dealt with customers both face to face and on the phone. Are you looking someone with experience such like this?

“Do you have a degree?”
“Yes, I have a degree in tourism.”
